PEER CLAIMS FORTUNE
LEFT BY LUNATIC.. Claims to a fortune left by a lunatic 135 years ago are to be heard in the Chancery Division this term. In the interval the original sum of £50,000 has increased in value to hundreds of thousands of pounds. One of the claimants is Viscount Bangor, of Castle Ward, C. Down Ireland. In 1788 the fortune was in the possession of Mary J. L’Epine, then living at Portsmouth. It passed in 1798 to Maria L’Epine, who died a lunatic. No heirs to the property came forward and the estate reverted to the Crown. A year later the property is alleged to have been presented to Lord Howe by King George TIL, under a special indemnity that in the event of any next-of-kin being discovered the estate should be forefited. It is now claimed that Ahi-’ gail Eccles was an heir of Maria L’Epine, and that she married Robert Coldwell. It is through hei’ descendants that the present claim is being preferred. Besides Lord Bangor, the claimants include Mr A. C. Mason and Miss Mason, of London.
