RUNANGA BOWLING CLUB. The following report will be presented at the annual meeting of the Runanga Bowling Club, on June 29: — “Fellow Bowlers: Your Committee have pleasure in submitting the annual report for the season 1926-1927. In view of the West Coast tournament being held on your green, and in order to preserve the green as much as possible, the official opening did not take place until November 27; even then, the weather rendered play impossible, consequently we did not have the pleasure of receiving any visitors for the opening. However, an impromptu concert took place, which proved highly successful, and was enjoyed by ail present. Play commenced the following day, and a most successful season eventuated. The weather being all that could be desired, right through the season, the green kept in perfect order. Competition was keen throughout. Mr. N. Leach proved to be the champion singles player, and worthily represented your Club at the West Coast Singles Championship, held at Greymouth on February 14. Mr. Speakman won the Club Singles; Mr. D. Barnes won the Colt Singles; Mr. T. Halliday the Manning Trophy Sin-
gles; Messrs Warburton and Southward won the Champion Pairs; Messrs Cook and Armstrong won the Club Pairs. The Macintosh Badges created a good deal of keen competition, the present holders being Messrs Murphy, Halliday, Brown and Rae. The Rae Buttons were also responsible for some very fine play, and are now held by Messrs Halliday and Armstrong. A Drawing Competition was also held, being won by Mr. T. Halliday. “The West Coast Tournament, which was held on yopr green, proved the
event of the year, being highly successful from evexy point of view. The weather was ideal, the green perfect, play was of a high order and the social side was excellent. Appreciative letters were received from most of the visiting clubs .thanking your Club for the kindness and hospitality extended to them. “Inter Club Matches: It is regretted that more matches did not take place between clubs, only one visit to and from Hokitika and Greymouth being
recorded. This was probably due to a certain extent, to the interference of the tournament. Members did not feel disposed to travel. The interchange of matches tends to create a good fellowship between the clubs, and hopes are entertained that members will take part in club matches next season, and not leave it to a few to do all the travelling. “The annual picnic took place at Mitchells in March, and was a decided
social success. We would have liked to have seen more members present, as from a financial point of view, a loss was made. However, everyone present voted the picnic a day of days, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. “Club Finances: The finances of the Club are quite good; after spending £302 on improvements, a credit balance of £6 16s 2d is shown. This is due to the energetic ladies’ committee, who are always to the fore in assisting your Club. The bag day and bazaar, together with the guessing competition, realised nearly £lOO. The following improvements have . been affected:—New wing on pavilion, new lockers, electric pump, electric light installed, concrete paths and the surroundings all nicely done up, which now makes a beauty spit to the town. The best thanks of the Club are due
to the ladies for their splendid efforts. The Committee also wish to express their sincere thanks to the Miners’ Union for the picture entertainments, to the Greymouth and local people who gave such a splendid concert recently, and also the euchre patrons,, all of which have helped the Club to achieve the great improvements and place the Club in such a healthy position as it is to-day. Your Committee recommend to the incoming committee the following new improvements: — Repairs to the curbing, and a new roller. “Appreciative reference was made at the last Committee meeting by the members present, to the valuable services rendered by the Club Secretary (Mr. T. Bowes) since the inception of the Club, and to mark the appreciation it was decided to make Mr. Bowes a i TirPSPllffl t inn in cnmn fono-ikln
pieseniuLioD. in some tangible form. “Your Committee go out of office, feeling that something has been done to make bowling a pleasure to the members of the Club, and think the incoming Comirritte will have a much easier time. We look forward with pleasure to the opening of the 1927-28
season, and trust all will enjoy to the full, Ye good olde game.”
