LATE SPORTING
HAWKE’S BAY‘JOCKEY CLUB. (Per Press Association.) HASTINGS, June 24. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Winter Meeting opened to-day in overcast weather, the track being sodden after overnight rain. The attendance is fair. Following are the results: — WOODLANDS STEEPLECHASE, 2 miles. — (2) Woden 1, (1) Banjuke 2, (5) Handy 3. Also started —Hokioj, Little River, Merry Singer, Sir Wai, Kirkwood, Scornful, Good Mark and Potana. Won by six'lengths, with a neck between second and third. Time 4.36 4-5. WHAKATU HACK HURDLES, 1 3-4 miles. — (1) Perle de Leon 1, (2) Peshwa 2, (3) Peheus 3. Also started —Lombardo. Won easily by six lengths, with a neck between second and third. Time 3.26. HAWKE’S BAY HURDLES, 1 3-4 miles. — (3) Comedy Prince 1, (6) Matu 2, (4) Highway 3. Also started — Gaze, Sottano and Waioeka Jack. Won by three length, with 100 yards between second and third. Time 3.31 2-5. SALE OF SPOONY. (Special to "Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 24. Spoony has been sold by the wellknown sportsman, Mr. F. Earl, K.C., and the horse leaves by the Marama to-day, consigned to his new owners in Westralia.
