Jeffries, E. A. Wells, T. W. Duff. Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs Morel and Keenan. x . The Dunedin Board wrote asking the Board to guarantee the fees for a child patient from Kumara, stating £4/4/- per week was the fee. The Secretary stated that he considered the fee too high and wired Dr. Valintine concrening it. The doctor’s reply was> to the effect that he considered the fee reasonable for the service required and as the patient was from an outside district. Mr. Duff said it was strange that a child of 18 months should be charged four guineas per week. It seemed as if the charge was too high. It was too heavy on a poor man. Mr. Davidson said that in other centres different. fees were charged. Mr. Jeffries said he partly agreed with Mr. Duff, but was a little in the dark. He asked, assuming that the child came from the Dunedin district and entered our hospital, what would be our charge'? The Clerk replied: “<£l/17/6 per week.” * The Chairman said that responsibility rests with the parent. He could not say what the Dunedin Board should charge. Dr- Valintine thinks it a fair charge. Mr. Duff: If it was ten guineas Dr. Valintine would think it a fair charge. The Chairman said he would not have guaranteed the amount if he had not known Mr. Fox to be an honourable man. The members generally considered th charge excessive, but the responsibility rested with the parent, who had not consulted the local Board. The position was an eye-opener to the Board, said Mr. Jeffries, and would put them on the qui vive for the future. The Chairman suggested and moved that the Dunedin Board be approached with the purpose of obtaining reciprocity with the Westland Board. — Carried. Dr. Valintine wrote respecting the expenditure of voluntary contributions on the objects for which they are contributed. Dr. Valintine wrote asking what loans would be required for the coming year.
