REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, June 14. A fire at Inangahua Junction yesterday destroyed the building at one time used by Mi’ H. Smith as an accommodation house, and latterly occupied by Mr . McLean and family. It was owned by Mr F. F. Keating of Reefton, and w r as a five roomed well built house, and was insured. Miss Kitty O’Brien left on Monday morning for Greymouth, where she enters the employ of the Dispatch Foundry. Mrs S. Quintrell, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs H. Cooper, Dick Street, left for her home at Roa on Sunday morning. The Stallard Cup Football match, Cronadun v. Shop Assistants played at Cronadun, was won by Cronadun, by 21 points to 5. The ground was wet and heavy after the rain. Miss Barnes, relieving teacher at the District High School arrived by Saturday evening’s train. Mrs S. Purgon (Miss May Whelan), now resident at Inangahua Junction, was in town on Saturday. Messrs R. Lochore and Thos. Irving, local members of the Motueka Licensing Committee, left to attend the annual meeting of that body. The license of the old Progress Junction hotel was allowed to lapse on June 1. Since the destruction of the building by fire some 18 months ago, business has been carried on in temporary premises. During the last 36 years the place has been a landmark, but the cessation of operations in the surrounding mines did not warrant the construction of a new building. Mr J. Burley’s trotting gelding Trimmer, annexed the Winter Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, covering the mile and a-quarter in 2.51. Reports to hand from the country districts show that severe weather conditions prevailed. There is 16 inches of snow at Big River, 18 inches on the Rahu Saddle and some eight inches on the Maruia Plains.
