COBDEN QUARRY.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—I was greatly amused with “In Work’s”, letter in Saturday’s '“Star,” re Cobden Quarry. I am not working in the quarry, neither do I hold any brief for the.quarry, but I certainly do like fair play, and commonsense. “In Work” asserts: Two men in Cobden Quarry are doing what it takes' twelve men to do in the railway quarry? What an indictment against the twelve men, also what wonderful men must work in the Harbour Board’s Quarry? Again, where is the slightest comparison between the two quarries? In the Cobden Quarry one is able to get a twohundred ton stone in one piece, while in the railway quarry one will have hard work to get even a five cwt stone. One is a gravel pit, the other is a quarry. “Shovelling mullock” as “In Work” calls ,it. is done merely to clear away aroupd the big stones in Cobden Quarry, and is a very small item in the work done there. The Harbour Board’s Engineer’s monthly report, as reported in the “Star” is a flat contradiction to “In Work’s” remark that money is being wasted, and the cost of getting such stone as required, together with the time taken, compares very favourably indeed with any other works of a similar nature in New Zealand, or for that matter in any part of the world, so that far from money being wasted, it is being very ably and most economically used. I am sure that the foreman in charge at Cobden Quarry is far better fitted to say how the work shall be done and how the men are to be placed than “In Work” is, and I am sure Greymouth is very fortunate in having such an .efficient man as the foreman at Cobden Quarry has proved himself to be, while as a quarryman he is second to none on the Coast, and it would be a hard matter to even find his equal in New Zealand. I should like to know whether “In Work’s” effusion is really out of consideration for the unemployed ? or whether it is in any way connected with a certain man’s dismissal from the quarry a short time back. I am yours ,etc., FAIR PLAY.
