HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, June 11. The meeting. of -the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. D. J. Evans, W. Jeffries, T..W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, A. C. Armstrong, Jas. King, E. Teichelmann, G. Heinz. A request from the Bank of New Zealand;, Hokitika for an approach to the new garage in Stafford Street, was referred to the Public Works Committee. This garage has been the subject of a good deal of comment being built about a foot above the footpath, which also is about three feet above the street level. The Council say they cannot raise the footpath at this spot. Motorists and others are interested in how the car is to be safely driven in and out of this garage- , . . Mr J. W. Morris wrote complaining to the Council of surface water lying in front of his residence in,Hall St. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee to act. Another matter referred to the Public Works Committee was a request made by Mr. J. Burns for an approach to the back door of his premises in Rolleston Street, also ia complaint from Mrs A. Boyd of gorse growingon portion of Jollie Street. Permission was granted the Fire Brigade to let its room upstairs for a small rental.

The Abattoirs manager (Mr J. Jarman) reported carcases examined during the month: 17 cows, 35 heifers, 65 bullocks, 217 sheep, 35 lambs, 28 pigs, 12 calves, condemned nil. Fees, £7O 7/-; same month last year £75 18/-. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £152 11/11; payments £557 13/3; credit £156 3/1. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided to increase the overseer’s salary by £lO per annum; to revise the cemetery fees; to charge 10/- per annum for pateAt W.C.,, or to instal a water meter.

Applications for caring for Cass Square, McAndrew Square, and the Pioneers’ memorial plot were received from R. Sumner for £l2 per month; R. Herring £B, H. Douglas- £6, J. Taylor £4; A. Lawson £8; J.. Millner £B. It was decided that R. Herring be given the position, he being a married man with a family.

The dverseer was instructed to prepare a full report of the state of the water pipe line, and for consideration at next meeting.

The settlers of Arahura, Kokatahi and Koiterangi are enthusiastic on the prospect of installation of .electricity in their districts. Meetings held in these places to discuss the matter have shown the settlers are anxious to seize the opportunity of adopting modern methods.

At the monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society held on Thursday night the knotty question of trout v. whitebait was again discussed. Correspondence from various sources oh the matter was not convincing, and the Chairman (Mr G. A. Perry), moved that the matter of stocking the rivers with trout should be' suspended in the meantime. This was afterwards withdrawn in favour of an amendment by Mr D. J. Evans that the stocking this year be confined to the lakes —Kanieri and those in South Westland.

A letter from J. Foote and 72 others, stated that a previous petition did not represent the views of the fishermen, and that they were of the opinion .that trout interfered very little with the whitebait industry. Sawdust in stream was a greater menace and stating the law should be upheld; and recommending that the rivers of Westland be stocked with quinnat salmon. The Chairman stated that he was not prejudiced on the subject, but was desirous of protecting an important industry.
