ECONOMIC CONFERENCE
FRENCH BUREAU PROPOSAL. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) GENEVA, May 14. It is learned in official circles that the French proposal to establish an autonomous permanent economic organisation is not likely to succeed. The French have searchingly canvassed the delegations, but are not. assured of sufficient support to justify seeking a, vote of conference. This is a serious blow to French aspirations, as many of the resolutions the French submitted to the various Committees included a number of subjects outside of the scope of the present conference which the French hoped would be referred to the suggested Bureau to form a programme of work for what would be another costly, unweildly organisation, armed with extensive powers, likely to menace- the free conduct of commerce and industry.
