BROKEN HILL TRAGEDY

ACCUSED ACQUITTED.

SYDNEY. May 1

The trial of James Hughes for the murder of Joan Smith, the six-year-old daughter of the former owner of Poolamacca station, near Broken Hill, on August 24 last, was opened and concluded at Broken Hill yesterday before Mr Justice Gordon and a jury. The evidence given at the inquest was repeated, but nothing new was adduced. Accused made a statement from the dock, endorsing his written statement given to the police, in which he declared that he put the child on a pony, that she became frightened, and when she fell off he became frightened and buried her. He added that the longer the time that went on the harder it became to say anything.

After the Judge summed up strongly in favour of the accused, the jury considered the matter for an hour and a quarter, and returned a verdict of not guilty. Hughes was discharged.
