PHILIPPINE REVOLT
NEGROES ATTEMPT COUP. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Assn.) MANILA, May 14. A revolt broke out among the negroes at. Negro Island on the morning of May 13. Several thousand labourers seized four towns simultaneously. They disarmed the police, also cutting the telegraph wires. Several police and civilians were killed, and many injured. The constabulary have dislodged rebels from the Town Hall at Victoria. Reinforcements are being despatched, from Manila. Philippine constabulary have been rushed to Negro Island to quell the rebellion. The rising is against the sugar planters. The rebels are followers of the self-styled Emperor In-trer-herado. . They attempted a coup and placed him on the “Throne of the Negroes.” Several negroes and police were killed, and many wounded.
