On arrival she loads a cairgo of coal and timber for Wellington. The Ihumata is due from Wanganui on Sunday to load timber for Melbourne. The Regulus sailed this morning for Nelson, coal laden. The Grey Harbour Board’s dredge Mawhera is expected to be ready to leave for Greymouth to-morrow or Monday, after having been on the Wellington Patent Slip at Evans Bay for the past three weeks, undergoing overhaul. The Mawhera is manned entirely by a Greymouth crew. There has recently been placed in commission off the coast of New Jersey the first Diesel-engined lightship in American wafers. Like all the lightships maintained, she is self-pro-pelled, so that she can proceed to and from her station at the prescribed intervals. For this purpose she is fitted with an eight cylinder 450 b.h.p. engine, which is arranged in a watertight compartment. In addition there are two 25 k.w. generators, each driven for supplying current for the motors which drive the principal pumps in the ship and the compressors for the fog syren. Current for lighting purposes and for the lanterns is provided by two 71 k.w. generating sets situated on the deck above the main engine-room and running on kerosene. The fuel tanks contain sufficient oil to enable the whole of the machinery to operate for a year. In normal weather all of it is at rest during the day, the only fuel consumed being in winter —the furnace of a small boiler employed for heating the crew’s quarters. The vessel has two 3,000 c.p. lamps, of which one is a standby, it being the practice in the United States lighthouse service to install duplicate lanterns.
