ACTRESS INTERVIEWED.
(Special to "Star. )
CHRISTCHURCH; April 27.
“Of course I am the servant of the public. They give me my living, and provide my audiences, and it is for their sakes that I study the slightest detail so diligently, and put my heart into my work.” This statement was made to an interviewer this morning by Miss Nellie Bramley, actress, whose work in the last three plays that have appeared at the Theatre Royal has so delighted Christchurch audiences. The subject was brought up by reference to a cablegram in the morning papers, in which Miss Sybil Thorndike, the famous English actress stated she was not the servant of the public and that audiences were like “Lumps of Suet.” She stands alone on that score, all other threatrical personalities being of an opposite opinion. “She must have been feeling very indignant about something,” Miss Bramley continued, “for it was a foolish thing to say, and will do her no good professionally. We charge the public for our entertainments, and must provide them with what they want. Reference to “lumps of suet” could only have been made in a moment of pique.” A NOVEL EXCUSE. “We have had all sorts of excuses to-day your Worship but this one caps the lot.” Said Senior Sergeant Martin to Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. William Wilson was the defendant, the charge against him one of being in Sandridge Hotel on Sunday. Constable Cummings said he had discovered the defendant in one of the ladies’ bedrooms upstairs shartly after noon. Defendant said he had come for dinner. When defendant was brought before the licensee and his wife, they said they had not known he was on the premises. “He went to a lady’s bedroom for dinner,” said the Senior Sergeant. “That was a peculiar place to have it.” Wilson, who. did not appear was fined 20/- with costs.
