GREY MAIN SCHOOL

C O-M MITTEE’ S M EETING.

The postponed monthly meeting of the Grey Main School Committee was held last evening; present: Messrs J. Tennent (Chairman), R. Williams, R. Barrowman, W. Scott, A. Oliver and FI. Herring. An apology was received for the absence of Mr W. H. Parfitt. The Headmaster reported for the month ending April 1, as follows: — The attendance in the lower classes at the Main School has been affected by the wet weather and the prevalence of colds. The averages for the month were as follow: Boys—Main School: 281, Blaketown: 43; total 324. Girls — Main School: 255; Blaketown: 35; total 293, making a grand total of 617. The total number on the roll is 667 (Main School 581, Blaketown 86). Owing to ill-health, Miss M. O’Brien was obliged to apply for leave of absence. Her place is being filled at present by Miss Graham. Miss Cullen left to take up her new duties at Sydenham.

As directed at your last meeting, I have purchased the required number of attendance prizes. I should be glad if the committee would make arrangements for their presentation. Last year the inspector recommended that the committee should be asked to consider the purchase of a Chelsea Individual Reading Set for the infant department. If funds are available, the purchase would be of considerable service to the infant teachers, who have already spent time and money in constructive* apparatus for the new methods of infant teaching. The cost of the set is 25/-. The Dental Nurse reported a total in operations of 284, having attended to 123 children in Blaketown, Cobden and Greymouth. Mr Williams said as this was the last monthly meeting of the committee. he would like to express the appreciation of his fellow members of the good work done by the secretary, Mr Herring, and the chairman, Mr J. Tennent. He moved in that direction. Mr Oliver seconded the motion and it was carried unanimously. Mr Tennent and Mr Flerring briefly responded, thanking the members of the committee and hoping to see them there for another year. The annual householders' meeting will be held on Monday evening, May
