FOREST FIRES
DAMAGE IN U.S.A. (Australian A N.Z. Cable Assn.) NEW YORK. April 13. There are hundreds of forest fires throughout six of the New England States and in New York State. The fires have laid waste thoi&ands or acres o£ woodlands, and have end angeerd many farms and towns, also resulting in one death thus far. I her e are also fires on Long Island, which have menaced some of the finest estates in America, and . over one thousand volunteer fire fighters, besides .regular forces, have been working for several days to save small towns contiguous to New York city. In several cases sparks have ignited town buildings, which could not be saved. There has been dry spring weather, virtually amounting to semi-drought, through the north-eastern seaboard. This has heightened the danger, particularly since these fires are occurring in the most densely populated districts in America.
