RECORD PRICE FOR CALF. SYDNEY, April 13. At the Show cattle' sales, a Victorian Shorthorn bull calf twelve months old, realised 1.300 guineas, an Australian and New Zealand record for a bull calf. POPULATION STATISTICS. SYDNEY. April 14. According to figures compiled by the Commonwealth Statistician, the population of Australia on December 31 last was 6,110,514, an increase of 118,430 during the year. Of the incresae, the excess of births over deaths was 76,210. The excess of arrivals over departures was 42,220. New South Wales is the most populous State with 2,347,781 inhabitants. The population of Tasmania decreased by 2278. The other States all show substantial, increases.

SHIPPING DISPUTE. MELBOURNE, April 13. A serious position in connection with inter-State shipping is again threatened. The Federal Management Committee of the Seamen’s Union has formed a new log as to wages to be served on shipowners. The demands are a big increase in wages and also structural alterations in many of the vessels trading on the coast. Secrecy has been observed in regard to the proceedings but it is stated that unless the owners agree to an immediate conference on the new claim, the seamen will be instructed to refuse to sail after a date to be fixed, except when engaged on the terms of the new log. TUBERCULOSIS CAMPAIGN. SYDNEY, April 14. The State Cabinet decided to create a new department with the object of combating tuberculosis. A Board will be set up, and the new director will.be Dr Henri Beret. Tne main objects of the deoartment are to administer all activities of an associated campaign against tuberculosis, arrange for the maintenance of families of tubercular patients' to supply propaganda for the education of the public regarding methods of combating tuberculosis, to assist in the after care, and follow up of tubercular patients, who are discharged from homes.'
