CHASING A BIRD

HOW A CHILD WAS LOST Carrying an infant, and with two young children holding to her skirts, Mrs. Costelow, wife of a settler at Yarrowyck, near Armidale, New South Wales, spent a recent night tramping through the bush searching for her 11-year-old daughter, who had wandered away at mid-day that day. The father was away, and the mother, who lives miles from other houses, had no one to send for assistance. With an agonised mind, she was fearful of gipsies, who had been in the district for the previous week', so she set out by herself, and it was 11 o’clock on the following day before she could get word to the Armidale police asking for assistance. A black tracker and a constable were despatched to the woman’s assistance immediately, and they were followed by two carloads of residents. However, the child was found lying beside a log, at mid-day. The child stated that she was chasing a bird and got lost in the hills. Though the spot where she was found is only 7 miles from home, she travelled over 15 miles during her wanderings.
