HOLY WEEK

SERVICES AT ST. PATRICK’S Next week which is Holy Week, will be observed with usual solemnity in St. Patrick’s Church. The Blessing and Distribution of Palms will take place on Sunday (Palm Sunday) at 10 a.m. This ceremony commemorates Our Lord’s entry to Jerusalem before His Passion. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings the Solemn Office of “Tenebrae” (darkness) will be sung. It is intended to be the funeral office of the Redeemer. The Gregorian Chant for the occasion and the deepening ot the darkness in the Church as the candles are extinguished one by one, reminding the people of the darkness which overshadowed the earth at the Crucifixion, never fail to be impressive. On Thursday (Holy Thursday) at 8 a.m. there will be Solemn High Mass, which will be followed by a Procession to the Altar of Repose. On Friday (Good Friday) at 9 a.m. the Solemn “Mass of the Pre-Sancti-fied” will be sung. An impressive feature of this Mass is the chanting of the Passion according to St.. John. The Cross will then be solemnly unveiled for veneration. The subsequent feeling of deep loneliness and grief which fills the church, gives w“ay gradually to an atmosphere of peace and expectation. Large congregations will assemble on Holy Saturday morning io listen for the first notes of the joyous “Alleluia” in the Mass of Easter Eve.
