Miss Mildred Eyes (Wellington), is visiting Franz Josef Glacier.

Miss M. Donovan will leave for 1 Christchurch on Tuesday, on holiday.

Mrs W. P. Hambleton left this morning for'Christchurch.

Mrs F. Campbell left this morning on a holiday visit to Taihape.

Miss A. Mould, Miss M. Watt and Miss th Gardiner, of Sydney,/are visiting the West Coast.

Mr W. S. Somerville (Christchurch), accompanied by Miss Thomas, are. spending a holiday on the West Coasts

Mrs R. Groom will return to Greymouth to-day, after spending three weeks’ holiday in Dunedin.

A cable message from London state that Mi’ Oliver Hall has been elected a member of the Royal Academy.

Mrs C. Ring, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs J. Ring, ’returned to Christchurch this morning.

Miss M. Mcßeath, Dunedin is the guest of Mrs T. Crankshaw, Palmerston Street.

Miss Doreen Clark, who has been visiting Greymouth, returned to-day to Christchurch.

Sister Moloney, Matron of the Grey Old People’s Home, left to-day on holiday to Christchurch.

Mr. A. H. Lawn, Hokitika, was a passenger to-day by the express en route to Wellington.

Rev. Father McMonagle, who has been absent on holiday, will, with Father Ma'guire, leave on transfer to Christchurch next Thursday.

mouth, will arrive from Auckland this * afternoon; She will be the guest of Mrs J. Ring.

The death is announced from London of Sir John Harmoon-Banner, a prominent man in Liverpool circles. He was born in 1847.

A London cablegram announced the death of Mr Lee at Newcastle, in County Galway. He was the first European officer who lived in the Fiji Islands, and was intimately acquainted with the habits of the early Maoris.

Messrs J J. Breeze, Chairman of the Westland Hospital Board, and G. Davidson (Hokitika), left this morning to attend the Hospital Board’s conference which is to be held in Christchurch.

Mr P. A. Keddell, Registrar of Pensions, Christchurch, and son of the late Major Keddell, S.M., for many years in Greymouth, who has been in hospital since November last, is progressing favourably towards recovery, and expects to be discharged from the hospital in about three weeks.

The death occurred yesterday of Mrs J. Cook, wife of Mr J. Cook, at Addington. They were former residents of Hokitika, and later of Stillwater, where Mr Cook was a ganger for the Railway Department. Mrs Cook leaves a husband and family. Mrs W. Howat, of Cobden, is a sister-in-law.

Mr William Fenton (ex-conductor and bandmaster), claims to be the “father” of the present band contest at Wellington, having been connected with bands for 64 years, and being now in his 75th year. He competed on Wednesday in the BB class, gaining honourable mention. Two years ago he was made an honorary member for life of the Christchurch Municipal Band.

Miss Rachel Mandi, Hokitika, left to-day for Wellington, from whence she sails on Tuesday for England. Among the passengers travelling by the same steamer as Miss Mandi will be Mrs R. S. Bean (sister of Mr T. Seddon), Miss M. Thurston, formerly matron at the Grey Hospital. Mr and Mrs Chas. Broad (Nelson College), and Mr and Mrs Cranston (of the Rimu Gold Dredging Co. Ltd).

Dr A. R. Falconer, who resigned the position of Medical Superintendent at the Dunedin Hospital some time ago, was the guest at a ceremony held at the Nurses’ Home on Thursday evening, when members of the Board and representatives of the staff were present. Dr Falconer has been connected with the present Board and its predecessor for twenty-one years. Falconer was presented with an illuminated address by the chairman (Mr W. E. S. Knight).
