CANADIAN PACIFIC LINERS.
BEING RE-ENGINED IN BRITAIN. The Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Gov.an, are now removing from the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Australia the machinery installation with which that vessel was fitted wtisn she was completed in Germany after the close of the war. That installation consisted., of turbines operating through the Fottiriger system of hydraulic transformers. The machinery was thoroughly up-to-date at the time of its construction, but the great advance that has been made in marine engineering during the past few years made it necessary for the owners to place an order for the complete fe-engining of the ship. . The vessel will be propelled henceforth by twin screws, each driven by one set <jf single-reduction, geared turbines of the latest Parsons type. The port and starboard sets will each consist of high-pressure, mediumpressure, and low-pressure turbines, each unit driving its own pinion in the reduction gearing. The ahead turbines will be all reaction, and the astern turbines will be partly impulse and partly reaction. The disposition of the three turbines in relation to the main gear wheel is such that the arrangement of the machinery will permit of easy and convenient access to all parts. The installation will develop a total combined shaft horse-power of 20,000 on ordinary service, with propeller revolutions of 125 per minute, a boiler pressure of 2201 b, and a superheat of 200 deg. F. Provision is made for an overload of 2i,000 shaft horse-powef, and the aggregate astern power will be 14,000. The reduction gearing will be of the double helical type; the thrust, tunnel, and propeller shafts will be of Siemens-Martin mild steel, and the propellers will be fourbladed. The steam generating plant will consist of one single-ended and six double-ended cylindrical boilers, working at a pressure of 2201 b per square inch under Hodwen’s system of forced draught. There will be a complete oil-burning installation of e’en of the latest types, with two auxiliary .Diesel engine generators, each capable of supplying the. whole of the ship’s lighting and also the power load for ventilation and other purposes. The designed service speed of the vessel is 18 knots.
Alterations amounting to a complete transformation are also beig made in the passei’.ger accommodation and all throughout the ship, so that, when the work is done the vessel will be as British in character as. she would have been if she had been built originally in the United. Kigdom. Sifice being taken over by the Canadian Pacific Railway- Company she has been running in the Pacific, but after she has been re-engined and otherwise transformed she will..be put in seP vied between Great Britain and the St. LaWrehce.
