JUDGE’S COMMENTS
WELLINGTON, Feb. 25
The Judge of the band contest said of the final in the B grade test, that it differed very much from the first selection. One suited some bands better than the others. The winner had taken some risk in playing with such quiet tone, as there was danger of losing quality, but the band had been successful, and it was a distinctly good effort. Several bands had excellent soloists, but lapses in general work had told against success. On the whole the playing was very good.
GREYMOUTH CONFIDENT.
(Special to “Star.”)
WELLINGTON, February 25. Members of the Greymouth Band have had good final practices, and are confident of playing well to-night in the final A ' Grade test, “Fra Diavolo.”
The Band’s soprano player, P. Griffin, has unfortunately developed a bad lip, and has not been able to play. It is hoped that the lip may be well enough to permit him taking his place with the Band when the final test comes to-night. Griffin had to withdraw from the soprano solo yesterday. In the E Flat Bass, T. Uimm (Greymouth) gave an excellent performance and was awarded 94 marks. J. Moye (Greymouth) scored 90. Greymouth trombone trio party played well, Judge Halliwell awarding them 45, the winner, Dannevirke, gaining 49. The playing in the B Grade final last night was very fine, the First Mouxiteds (Oamaru) giving a refined and excellent performance. Good renderings were also given ■by the New Plymouth Citizens, Dannevirke and the Central Mission next in order of merit. A surprisingly fine performance was given by Miramar, a young band.
An old -West Coaster, Sutherland, of the Runanga Band, got a fourth prize last night.
GRIFFIN RECOVERS.
The following telegram was received by the “Star” this afternoon from Mr W. D. Murray (secretary of the Greymouth Band): —“‘All in great form for the final test to-night and the march to-morrow. Griffin is able to play again.”
Mi- J. King, who dead-heated for first place in the soprano cornet solo, is the son of Mr King, mine manager at the State Mine, Rewanui.
