A serious accident happened at Carr’s mill, Tinline Valley, yesterday. A mill hand named James Horwood was replacing the belt on a large pulley and was turning the pulley by hand, when the engine unaccountably started. MAN MISSING. MASTERTON, Jan. 28.

Harold James Crewe, of Kaituna, about 28 years of age, has been missing since yesterday afternoon, and his absence is causing considerable anxiety. He was last seen at Crewe’s wool-shed about 2 o’clock in the afternoon, but was not seen leaving. As he did not return home as usual, his absence was reported to the Masterton police. Search parties were organised and the farm and neighbouring country were searched, but without result.

Crewe had been shooting during the morning with a pea rifle, which he brought back with him. The pea rifle is now missing, so it seems probable that he took it with him. The search is being continued. (

FISHERMAN DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 28.

An inquest on the death of Robert Fraser, who was drowned on the Waimakariri river bar yesterday morning, was conducted by Mr Mosley, S.M., to-day. Fraser was a member of a fishing party, which got into difficulties, when wading across the bar, being caught in deeper water than they anticipated, owing to the rising of the tide. Two other members of the party, John Pickard and Harold Jefcoate. went to the assistance of Fraser, who was a poor swimmer, but they had to leave him on becoming exhausted themselves. Fraser, in his drowning frenzy, grabbed both the swimmers so that they had difficulty in disengaging themselves, and they reached the shore with difficulty. A verdict was returned that Fraser was drowned whilst engaged in fish-ing-trawling operations. The Magistrate commended Jefcoate and Pickard on their plucky action in attempting to rescue their comrade.
