LATE MESSAGES
LONDON, Dec. 28
The Air Force Flying Manual devotes a special section to preventive hygiene in relation to flying. It points out that, descent from high altitudes necessitates repeated swallowing for the purpose of .equalising the air pressure within the ears by the eustachian tubes connecting the throat with the ear drums. It recommends pilots to chew gum, which, producing saliva, facilitates swallowing, which is aften difficult during the descent, owing to the throat being parched. It. advocates clicking the ears (bv pinching the nost, and forcing the air from the chest into the nose, until the click is heard) when a sudden descent is imperative. .It also urges the avoidance of excessive smoking likely to lead to throat con : gestion, and the care of teeth, and recognises officially the word aerobatics, defining manoeuvres outside the normal runs and landings.
WASHINGTON, Dec- 28
General Andrews announces that he has a new ‘formula to make drinking unsafe for Democracy. Starting on January I‘, alcohol will contain a certain percentage of otherwise harmless drug, so unpleasant to taste that it will be impossible for the most corrugated throat to swallow it.
