AUCKLAND, Dec. 6. Samuel Arthur Pudney, aged 35, an ; habitual criminal, serving two years, i daringly escaped from Mount Eden gaol at 7.30 last night. He made an excuse to visit the quarry, and seizing a favourable opportunity, he dashed through an open gate. In face of pursuing warders he got away under cover of the darkness, and despite a vigilant search, he is still at large. AVON BRIDGE. CHRISTCHURCH, December 5. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr Justice Stringer gave his reserved judgment in a case in which certain citizens of Christchurch, interested in the improvement of the Avon river, sought an injunction to restrain the New Brighton Borough Council from erecting a low level bridge over the river, which would have prevented the passage of all but small pleasure craft. His Honor held that the bridge, if erected, would constitute a nuisance and granted an injunction with costs of £35 and disbursements. BUTCHERS RESUME. MASTERTON, December 5. Twenty-three unionist slaughtermen commenced at the Waingawa Freezing Works on Saturday morning. The volunteer butchers who wished to continue were kept on. A corresponding number of labouring hands also reported for work. The management reports that everything is back to normal. HASTINGS, December 5. The freezing workers, acting on official instructions, will commence work on Monday morning. FEILDING, December 6. At the freezing works this morning, six butchers w.ere called in, in addition to twenty volunteers previously engaged. Six unionists immediately accepted books, and work with the volunteers. Everything is going smoothly. The lambs are rather late in maturing, but increasing numbers are coming forward daily.
