MEETINGS

GREY PROGRESS LEAGUE. A meeting of the Executive of the Grey District Progress League was held at the Town Hall last evening. Present: Messrs D. M. Robertson (chair), J. Wingham, F. Izzard, J. O’Brien, H. Trouland, Kim. Williams, J. B. Kent, F. Parkinson, J. B. Kent, J. W. Greenslade, J. W. Crooks, and E. I. Lord, Sec-retary-Organiser. Apologies were received from- Messrs L. B. Miller, L. Patterson, A. E. Kilgour and A. H. Wilde. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting, the Chairman referred to the Dobson disaster, and moved a vote of sympathy with those who had lost their loved ones. The motion was carried in silence, those present standing. Arising from the discussion on the inward correspondence, it was resolved to order another thousand hand books of the district, as the Tourist Department required 1,500 copies for distribution throughout the Dominion, and abroad. This work was reported to be well in hand and will be completed before Christmas. The Secretary was instructed to ' write Messrs Thomas Cook and Sons and point out that now every facility would be given to touring parties who desired to visit Pnnakaiki, Moana or Mitchell’s. In this connection returns showed that while 5,000 people last year visited the. Glaciers, few indeed went to or knew anything about Punakaiki, A ’ special committee comprising Messrs Robertson, Wingham, Greenslade and the organiser was set up to make arrangements for the opening of an office during the coming holiday season for the purpose of arranging cars for visitors to visit local beauty spots. The question of arranging a deputation to wait on the Cobden Town Board on Monday evening next to explain the objects of the League and for the purpose of forming a Cobden Branch, was left in the hands of Mr. Lord. It was resolved to hold a general meeting on Friday, December* 17, to which the following recommendations will be submitted :—• “That this League deplores the amount of monev sent overseas for the purchase of goods, when the same or better value can be obtained locally, and that the League adopt some slogan expressive of this sentiment (in this connection suggestions are invited). and pledges itself to do its utmost, even advocating legislation to place unon such goods a prohibitative duty and so make such an undesirable practice impossible.” “That this League realising the urgent need of a Children’s Hospital at Grevmonth. will, together with its country Branches endeavour’ to raise during 1927-28 sufficient money to erect same.” With regard to this it will be submitted to the meeting that the whole district be organised in this effort and that during the coming year various functions will be held to further the movement, and that in July. 1928, when the Diamond Jubilee of Grevmonth occurs, a special effort be made to raise the necessary money. Tn the course of organising the League country branches, the project has been alreadv acclaimed as a man size movement in the progress of the district. GREY SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Grey School Committee.was held last evening; present, Messrs W. H. Parfitt, P. Beck, R. J. Williams, R. Barrowman. and H. Herring. The Headmaster, Mr. D. M. Shirlaw, was also present. In the absence of the Chairman, Mr. J. Tennent, who is out of town, Mr. W. H. Parfitt was voted to the chair. The Rector’s report showed a substantial improvement in the school attendances, both at the main and Blaketown schools. At Blaketown, the average attendance has been most satisfactory. The standard VI Proficiency Examination will be held next Tuesday. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to Miss Maisie Martin and Master R. Sullivan, who were placed first and second respectively in the Scott Memorial Essay, and were both pupils of the Grey Main School. The Headmaster asked that any improvements to the school grounds, decided upon by the committee be carried out during the Christmas vacation. It was decided to make an inspection of the grounds at an early date and then decide what work should be put in hand. The dates for the school concert and the screening of the Jubilee film were fixed for Dec. 13 and 14. An application for a donation towards improvements to the pipe organ at the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, at Auckland was received. It stated that the organ was badly in need of additional stops and other improvements. £3OO was required for the repairs and it was proposed to devote any surplus over that sum to the purchase of books in the new Braille, for the use of students at the school.—lt was decided to donate £2/2/-. The Headmaster gave a list of minor repairs required at the * school, and these were authorised.
