Three residents were convicted and fined for being on licensed premises after hours, xlie following business was transacted at the Warden’s Court : V. E. . McColl for renewal of timber reservation Ko 5108.—Adjourned to November b. Same, for certificate No. 5109 also adjourned to Nov. 5. V. J. Robinson for timber warrant over block situated in Maimai S.D. —Granted for 12 months. W. Schwass for timber warrant over 20 acres in Inangahua S.D. —Granted for 6 months. W. J. Morris for renewal'of timber reservation certificate No. 4090.—Adjourned to Nov. 5. Henry Betts, surrender of tramway license, No 5341. —Granted. H. A. Honey, renewal of coat prospecting license No. 5783. —Adjourned to Nov. 5. T. Moore and 1. Blackadder for renewal of coal prospecting license No. 5778. —Adjourned to Nov. 5. T. Ine luuai uruiicu ui mv : Lodg e conducted a ball in the Theatre Royal on Friday October 15. This function was probably one of the best managed and best attended of the Reason, the dancing accommodation of the hall being taxed to its utmost, approximately 180 couples being on the floor. Excellent music was provided by an orchestra consisting ot . Mrs Ord (piano), Miss Costello (violin) Mr Walslebean (piccolo), Mr Elleston (bass). The decorations of the hall were ably carried out by Mr R. Wills and party. A large number of couples were present in fancy dress, the prize winners being : Best Dressed Lady and Gent, Miss Oadan and Farther (Watteau Shepherdess) Ist prize ; Second Prize Miss Ferguson (Carnival Folly and Mrs Manson (Folly) tied. Special prizes were won by Miss McGregor (Crinoline Lady in blue) and Miss Brown in the same costume in white. Miss Dobson also won a special prize, while Mr McDonald as a swagger was also declared a winner. Mr and Mrs Downey of Murchison carried out the judging to the satisfaction of all. A ladies’ committe e was responsible for the Supper arrangements, which were all mat could be desired, the tables being daintily set and loaded with good things. Visiting delegates wpre present from Murchison, Westpoit, Blackball and Greymouth Lodges. Mr G. Pascoe, the local secretary, in thanking the delegates and the general public for their attendance made special mention of the ladies’ committee, Messrs Gebbie and Apstin and the Electric Light Coy., for the fine lighting of the hall, and to Mr R. 1 and party for the decorations. Dancing was continued to the ‘wee sma’ hours. The forthoming concert find operetta by the Convent pupils promises ( to eclipse all previous- efforts in that direction yft attempted by this able band of perforinprs. The Sisters hqye spared no pains or expense in training and dressing the children for. the

operetta, to "be produced, aiid' this public are always ready and willing to see and appreciate good work, especially the efforts qf local talent, apd in this case it is a certainty their hopes will not be in any way disappointed The music “is tuneful, all the accompaniments leaving nothing lacking in ybat is in every way an excellent production.
