HOCKEY

MAWHERA v. REEFTON. The Mawhera Ladies’ Hockey Club played Beef ton at Victoria Park for the semi-final of the Brook Cup. A good game was witnessed ana both teams opened well, and end to end play was the order, till Mawhera settled to work; then Reefton was penned in their own twenty-five for a white, and in a forward rush Mawhera scored by N. McGrath. Right from the bully Mawhera came again, and Reefton had to concede a few corners to clear their goal. From one of these comers, N. Furness scored a good goal, through a crowd of players. All the players were feeling the strain of a fast game, in which the Reefton back had played a good game under heavy pressure. Reefton’s chief fault was that all their players crowded in the centre of the field, leaving the Mawhera wing players an open field. Half time was sounded with Mawhera leading, two goals to nil. From the re-start Reef ton made a rush on the Mawhera goal, this being the first they had been down, and they came near scoring, only the Mawhera goalie stopped the rush and cleared. Then the Mawhera forwards came again in a good run by the outside right, which resulted in Mawhera scoring again through Miss Payne. This ended the scoring, leaving Mawhera winners by 3 goals to nil, and qualifying to jneet Westport in the final for the Brook’s Cup.
