LONDON, October 20. Colonel Wray, the . owner of a mansion in Yorkshire, shot his wife and son with a sporting gun. Then he scattered the house with kerosene and straw, and started a fire, after which he shot himself dead in his bedroom ; but when he fell he. extinguished the flames. He had also started a fire on the ground floor, which died out after burning the stairs. ROUMANIAN LOAN PROPOSAL'S. NEW YORK, October 20. The New York "World” says that on Wednesday, soon after Queen Marie leaves the United States, the Roumanian Government will offer the American public a bond issue amounting to between twenty-five and fifty million dollars. It adds: "Roumania has been negotiating for a loan here since 1921, but has been unable *4 get funds. The bankers said it was because °f defaults in connection with Ehrtlish and 1 French loans, also mining lax’s of 1924 prohibiting the entry °of capital to the Roumanian j oilfield, except under Roumanian control, tC?ether with the unsettled political conditions.” The "New York Times” says: "The reports that Roumania is about to obtain a loan in the Uffijed States inspired by the visit of Quet.n Mane to this country, have received no credence in financial circles.”

BEAM WIRELESS. LONDON, October 20. Marconi, addressing American and Empire pressmen, said the operation of beam wireless in Australia, would not be long delayed. It will give direct transmission without intermediate stations, and be an additional supplementary route from Canada, with a guarantee of seven hours’ daily service, which will be greatly exceeded. A twenty-six metre wave length will be used, or alternatively, a shorter length in event of unusual atmospherics. Marconi claimed that with the beam system atmospherics virtually ceased to exist a .hindrance to high speed communication. It was undoubtedly a system of unlimited telegraphy, and was also applicable to telephony and photography. AVe can visualise the future Imperial Conference at which delegates can represent their countries without leaving their firesides. Ihe tests in Australia will commence in six weeks. It will-be impossible to pick up message intermediately owing to the high speed.
