WOMAN’S SUICIDE

AN ASHBURTON TRAGEDY.

ASHBURTON, October 21 A young married woman, the wife oi Patrick McGinn, was drowned in the Ashburton River. A young man reported to the police about noon that, as he was crossing the bridge, a woman who was at the water’s edge called to him, saying - "If anyone enquires for McGinn, you can tell them I have drowned myself.” An immediate search was made, resulting in the body being recovered from a deep pool.

HUSBAND’S DRUNKENNESS. ASHBURTON, October 21.

When the inquest was opened Lis’” evening for. the purposes of taking formal evidence of identification of Bridget McGinn, the husband was placed under arrest on a charge of drunkenness. . Coroner Cow said that McGinn was so much under the influence of liquor that he would not allow him into the morgue. It was a standing disgrace that a man should be in such a condition when going to identify the body of his dead wife. He had asked the police to take McGinn in charge and bring him before the Magistrate m the morning. The ages of the deceased s children range .from six years to fourteen months. She recently was separated from her husband. ■ Mr Mosley, S.M., remanded McGinn for a week in custody. Accused is to be allowed to attend his wife’s funeral if he desires. • _________
