SUCCESSFUL DEMONSTRATIONS (Special to “Star.’ ) WESTPORT, October 15. The demonstration of work by day and evening pupils at the Westport Technical High School, which took place on Wednesday evening, was undoubtedly a great success from every point of view x and served to show the public in plain truth the value of the school to Westport and district. Although there has been occasion to refer to the lack of support given to the local educational institution, particularly in regard to the apathy displayed in connection with evening classes, most appreciable interest was displayed last evening in the work generally by parents, guardians and the public. The result of the demonstration will be a triumph for the director (Mr Metson) and his efficient staff ; and also a tribute to the ability of the students. A noticeable factor and one that must ensure success was the perfect understanding prevailing between tutors and pupils, a spirit of harmony and cooperation predominating. Complimentary remarks were to be heard Qn all sides regarding the excellency of the exhibits generally, which would be gratifying indeed to the Director, the staff and pupils, and the keen interest evinced'by visitors will have the effect of spurring pupils on to higher and more ambitious results. ine classes were exhibited under the teachers as follow:—Typing, Miss Gilbert; evening book-keeping, MrStruthers ; shorthand, Miss Hogg; evening applied art, Mrs Radforr., girls’ cookery, Miss McCieady , gn s physics, Mr Watson; boys chemistry, Mr Nicol; drawing, Miss Marshall, engineering and mayhene drawing, HiMilne ; evening woodwork, Mr Coo^ e - The following trophies are also held by the school -.—Athletic Shield InterHouse Competition, won by Giey House ; Keating Cup ; boxing ; it Cup ; Girls’ Championship; Lady Godley Cup ; shooting, Prince Cup ; Rugby Fourth Grade; Swimming Championaptly demonstrated- to the public on Wednesday evening then ability educationally, the students of the Technical High School determined yesterday afternoon to give the public a taste of their qualities recreatively. With this object in view, they piet teams representing past students at hockey and football. Unfortunately, the weather conditions were very unfavourable, militating greatly against the attendance. Nevertheless, those who braved the elements were treated to interesting displays of both pastimes,' in which the school showed superiority. In the hockey venture, the students played up to their best form, although opposed by a solid combination, which included prominent players, both Westport and Ramblers. The school girls displayed good combination and exercised better judgment than previously in circle work. Ihe students won by four goals to two. ine Rugby game was also a triumph for the present pupils, the team being greatly strengthened by the inclusion of Easton and Larsen, of the Old Boys junior fame, who are still students or the institution.' The game was fairly evenly contested, with school showing persistency and gameness, which ultimately led to victory. The ex-students fielded the heavier combination, including several members of the Old Boys’ team, and the display of both sides was of a fine order. The school won by nine points to five,
