HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL (Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, Sept. 25. The Borough Council met this evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. H. T. Parry, AV. Jeffries, Jas. King, A. K. Elcock, J. Lloyd. Apologies were made for the absence of Crs. Coulson and Orr, and further leave of absence was granted Cr. Blank. Park and Murdoch, wrote applying for transfer of Municipal Reserve from Mrs. Douglas to her son.— Approved. The Publicity Officer Internal Affairs Department wrote asking for photographs of Westland for reproduction on post cards.—Action of Town Clerk in supplying same approved. D. J. Evans (County Clerk) wrote asking for formal authority appointing Mr. Sloss as inspector be passed by the Council.—Passed on the motion of the Mayor and Cr. Lloyd. The Grey County Council wrote notifying fees collected on motor traffic, and enclosing Council’s quota £52/18/0. The Westland Competitions Society wrote thanking the Council for assistance given in connection with the

L Competitions. , Tomlinson and Gifford, wrote ask- . ing permission to erect a wireless special on top of Town Hall.—Re- ’ quest granted. | The Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote reporting that the whole of the fire plugs in the town were examined and pointing out that a number required attention. The Town Clerk stated that the Overseer had been instructed to attend to the matter. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £516/19/11; payments £l3B/5/6; debit balance £394/10/8; loan account credit £47/10/1. Accounts amounting to £37/12/11 were presented and passed for payment.

WORLD EMPIRE. In the pages of history we read of the rise and fall of universal empires. The Babylonians ruled in magnificent splendour until they were vanquished by the cruel Medes and Persians. Then the illustrious Alexander led the conquering Greeks to world dominion, only to be overthrown by the ’’iron monarchy of Rome.” To-day that once mighty empire is broken into warring nations. Can the world continue this or will it be welded into one great empire? The answer is found in the Bible. This subject will be considered by Air R. 11. Powrie in his address to-morrow (Sunday) ,at 7 p.m. in the Foresters’ Hall, Albert Street.
