RAILWAY WORKSHOPS
BRITISH TENDER ACCEPTED.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, September 14.
The tender of the Scottish engineering firm of Sir William Arrol and Co. has been accepted by the Government for the erection of the new railway workshops at Petone. The contract price is not divulged, hut it is understood that it is between £lBO,OOO and £200,000. All British materials are to be used in the execution of the work. Nine firms submitted tenders. The final selection was made from the three following:—Sir Wiliam Arrol aJid Co., the Horseley Bridge and Engineering Co., and Dorman Long and Co. Sir William Arrol and Co. were the lowest tenderers. Their local representatives are Messrs Cory Wright and Salmon. The tender of Sir William Arrol and Co. is considered by the special committee which inquired into the tenders to be very satisfactory. The new workshops are to be erected at the Hutt, close to the Waiwetu Stream. They will be required for the centralised locomotive repair shops for the heavy repairs for the North Island. Their complete erection will take, it is estimated, about fourteen months, after which the installation of the machinery and equipment will be proceeded with. Since it is recognised that the economies on which the scheme of improvement is based will not be obtained in their fullest measure till the works are completed, every effort is being made to complete them in three years, as planned.
