AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (Special to “Star.”) WELLINGTON, July 28. Five athletes are to represent New Zealand this year in the Australasian championships, to start at Brisbane on August 14. It is also the intention of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to have representatives present at the biennial conference of the Amateur Athletic Associations of New Zealand and Australia, which takes place during the period of the championships. The team assembles at Wellington to-morrow and sails by the Ulimaroa on. Friday. An official farewell will be tendered the teain by the Association on Friday morning. The team consists of the following athletes who will compete in the sports mentionedJ. W. Shirley (Auckland) jumps, hurdles, and Decathlon; S. A. Lay (Hawera), javelin throwing; H. Cabot (Dunedin), one and three-mile walks; W. Harvey (Wairarapa), hammer and discus throwing; W. Savidsan (Auckland), one and three-mile runs. It was the intention of J. R. McCrystal (Auckland) also to make the trip, but he met with an injury recently. The manager of the team will be E. G. Guy, member of the New Zealand Athletic Council and Secretary of the Wellington Athletic Club, who will also.be New Zealand’s chief delegate at the conference. Many matters of importance to sport are on the agenda paper for the conference, one m which New Zealand is particularly interested being the proposal to revise the reinstatement rule. It is intended that the team shall stay at Sydney a few days before going to Brisbane, and will start training operations at the New South Wales capital. At present it is intended that the team will return to New Zealand so as to arrive at Wellington by September 1. The programme for the championship is as follows : —August 14, lOOyds, 440yds. one mile, three mile walk, 120yds hurdles, pole vault, throwing 161 b hammer, throwing discus, throwing javelin. August 17: Decathlon; championship events, 100 metres, 400 metres, running broad jump, running high % jump, putting 161 b shot. August, 19: Decathlon; championship events, 110 metres hurdles, 1500 metres, pole vaulting, throwing discus, throwing javelin. August 21: 220yds, 880yds, 3 miles, one mile walk, 440yds hurdles, running broad jump, running high jump, putting 161 b shot, relay race. ,

VISITING TEAMS WANTED. (Fez Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. At a meeting of the Canterbury Athletic Centre, the Secretary reported having written to the Council, stating that "“the Centre was very much in favour of visits from foreign teams as a means of raising the local standard and also of raising funds. No acknowledgement of the Centre s letter was received. It was decided that the Secretary be instructed to write to the Council recommending that steps be taken immediately to arrange for another tour of athletes, preferably from America.
