VALUELESS CHEQUES

YOUNG MAN’S FRAUDS.

AUCKLAND, June 21

Three charges of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques and. one of attempting to obtain a Nash motor car, valued at £475 by means of a valueless cheque for £491 7s Id, avere admitted in the Police Cocrt by John James Morgan, aged 23. Mr Nightingale, licensee of the Star Hotel, said that the accused stayed at the Hotel from May 15 to May 17. The accusel gave witness a cheque for £lO, which, when piesented at the bank, was dishonoured, and the words, “not sufficient funds were written on the back. William Stanley Millar, garage proprietor said that, in response to a telephone call, h 6 interviewed the accused on June 10. The accused asked witness if he 'had a twoseater Nash car for sale, adding that he desired to buy a car. Witness .said that he had. Accused told him that he was a farmer from Northern Wairoa, and gave him to understand that lie was a man of monev, and had come to Auckland to invest capital. On June 10, accused arranged to take a car away, and gave witness a, cheque for £491 7s Id to cover the cost of purchase, registration and insurance. The cheque was subsequently dishonoured.

Detective White’ said that the accused issued two cheques lor small amounts at Whangarei. One was to a boardinghouse proprietor, and the other to a taxi proprietor. In a statement made to Detective White, the accused said that he nad an account at the Bank of New South Wales, Wanganui, but there were only a few shillings in it. He admitted that he knew he should not have issued the cheques in the Circumstances.

A statement furnished by the Accountant at the Bank of New South Wales showed that, altogether, the accused had issued valueless cheques for a total amount of £1335.

“Accused gave his’ grandmother a cheque for £7, but this has not been included in the charges,’’ Detective White said. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. On a charge of issuing a valueless cheque for £l2 10s at Wanganui, he was remanded to appear at Wanganui next Monday.
