The race was decided - at Perth on Saturday evening last before an enormous and enthusiastic crowd.. Owing to the number of entries it had to be decided in heats and a final. The 7.7 minimum at Westport has given some poor class horses a big load to carry. Gaslight appears to be harshly treated in all his races. Big Push has an opportunity to regain his reputation at Westport. Great Bingen has evidently kept his form in Australia, and there will be a lot of interest in the remaining contests. The mile and a-half takes place next Saturday night and the two mile event the following Saturday. Taraire must be back to form, and will always be dangerous. Bert Pass has a new addition to his stable which promises to get a stake at Easter.

Fred Gilbert has some promising maidens which he is getting ready for sale. The Auckland-owned Royal Tea was not long in getting on the winning list in Australia. C. Gieseler (Wingatui) easily leads the 'New Zealand trainers’ honours list. Desert Gold’s daughter, Oreum, contested sixteen races as a two and three-year-old prior to earning her first winning bracket in the Woodville Cup. D. Withers Jieads both trainers’ and drivers’ lists in the'trotting sport. The Judicial Committee of the Banks Peninsula RacingTTub met after the Terawera Hack Handicap on Saturday to inquire into an incident when the field was leaving the straight, in which Some Fox was the chief sufferer. D. R. Gunn, the rider of Rag Fair, was held to have caused the trouble, and he was suspended for the remainder of the day. Lady Zetland won the Great Easter Handicap and the Great Autumn Handicap in 1894, a feat which was repeated by her daughter, Lady Lilian, in, 1903. No horse has won the double since then, but Gold Light, Royal

Divorce, Listening Post, (Tommy Dodd, Grand Knight, Archeen, Clarinda, Overdrawn, Haze, Carnot, Miss Minerva, Baldowa and The Harp are eligible to run in both races next month. Lou Robertson, trainer of Top Gallant, is a New Zealander who has made good in Victoria. Robertson went to' Melbourne as a trainer and driver of trotters. However, Messrs A. and G. Tye decided to go in for .gallopers and handed over the control of them to Robertson, that trainer soon demonstrated that he was equally at home in that sphere. Robertson has had some noted, horses through, his hands,

notably the Caulfield Cup winner Lavendo, but probably he would readily admit that he has not had the equal of Top Gallant. Robertson has won scores of races and, says an Australian critic of him, he is one of the most expert trainers and best judges in Australia.
