CYCLIST KILLED INVERCARGILL, March 8. • An elderly man, Mr. Frederick Witty meat inspector at the abattoirs, was knocked down by a; motor while cycling home this evening. Deceased was a brother of Mr. George. Witty, late Member for Riccarton. RAILWAY FATALITY. AUCKLAND, March 8. . i The man killed on the railway Urie between Penrose and Southdown, has been identified as W. H. Seed, yard foreman for R. and. W. Hellahy, at Westfield. LOSS OF MEMORY. 4 AUCKLAND, March, 9.' Frederick Holmes, bootmaker by trade, reported missing for some days, has been found. He wais suffering from a lapse of memory and ha’d no recollection of where he had been. WAITOMO STRIKERS. AUCKLAND, March 9. , Fourteen members of the ?Waitomo’s crew failed to pay the tines of fve pounds each. Twelve were arrested and will serve seven, days in prison. There were no criminal cases and Judge MacGregor was presented with, a pair of white gloves. His Honor ebngratu-. lated the district on the satisfactory state of things, and hoped that it would long continue.

CAR ABLAZE. WELLINGTON, March 9. Lato last night a valuable sixcylinder car was completely destroyed by fire. The driver received a message from a friend that he had run out. of petrol, and the driver started to take a supply to him. Apparently the tin 1 was leaking, for in Evans Bay the car burst into flames, and was reduced to scrap iron. * , P.O. BANK FRAUD. AUCKLAND, March-9. William Lowe, 23, admitted in the Police Court that he altered a credit .entry in a Post Office Savings Bank Book from three pounds to three hundred pounds. He was committed for sentence at the Supreme Court. It was stated that the bank was not defrauded of the money, though accused was on the way to obtaining £l6O from the account.

CROSSING COLLISION NAPIER, March 8. Added to the list of railway crossing accidents 1 was one late this afternoon; when a train leaving Napier at 4.35 struck a motor car at Woodcock’s crossing, a short distance outside the Borough boundary. The carwas badly damaged, i but the driver, William Robinson, of Clive, escaped, luckily with minor abrasions. The crossing is very dangerous. Only recently did it come into use to any ex tent, when all traffic on the main Napier-Hastings road was diverted over, whilst the main road is being put down in concrete. Houses right on the crossing obscure the view. NEW PLYMOUTH FIRE. NEW PLYMpUTH, Mdfrch 8 Fire caused structural damage and almost entirely ruined the stock of the New Plymouth Soft Goods Coy. a u six o’clock this evening. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as the premises had been closed only a short while, and everything appeared safe; when they were locked up. Three leads of hose extinguished the fire in about twenty minutes. The company* carries a stock of ladies’ wear, the flimsiness of which makes it highly inflammable. The building, which was saved from total destruction by concrete and brick walls, is owned by Mr. G. R. Colson, and is insured in the South British Office for £l2,ooo.’The insurances on the stock are not available.
