“LIMITED” IN DANGER

ALLEGED TRAIN-WRECKING. (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., March 9. What appears to be a dastardly attempt was made last evening to wreck the North-bound Limited express, when an obstruction consisting of beams iron! the cattle stops w.ere placed across' the metals at crossings at Terrace End and Kelvin Grove, the former being a suburb and the latter some three miles distant from Palmerston NorthIn the case of Terrace End, one beam uad been wrenched from the stop and placed on the rails. 1 It was shattered by the bogey wheels, of the engine. At Kelyin Grove, four beams were on the line, on© of which was thrown clear. The other three were sniashed. On the. secund occasion, the' train stopped, but resumed the journey, and the ui/udeut was reported at Feilding. Gangers were immediately sent to the crossings concerned and the police were advised this morning. Senior Detective Quirke is-investigating, but the perpetrator or perpetrators is as yet unknown--There is no doubt that the attempt was particularly on the Limited, for at Terrace End the Main Trunk and Napier lines lie side by. side, and the beqms were placed only onrihe former. A train passed over the line an hour and a-half before, when the line was clear. ; It is regarded as a fortunate escape from what uugbt’haye been a serious derailment. It is. believed not to be the work of children. The beams at the cattle stops are nailed by the ends to cross pieces, but the wood had partly rotted and would not require a great deal, of strength to wrench tlrem"from position.
