RIFLE SHOOTING

ARMY CHAMPIONSHIP (Per Press Association;) TRENTHAM, March 9. The army rifle championship meet- ; - ing opened this morning, in fine V weather and light- variable wind. The visibility was patchy owing to passing clouds. The competitors, who total 450, including a party from the N.Z. naval division, paraded early and were briefly addressed by Colonel Burgess, ’chief executive officer, who welcomed the new' competitors and made clear the need for implicit observance to the rules governing the conduct of shooting. By nine o’clock firing was in full blast, a start being made with the first'leg'’• of the army championship series rapid and snapshooting at 300 yards, and deliberate shooting at 600 yards. The first two were over 'by eleven o’clock, some fair scores being registered, though many found it easier to hit the mound in front of the targets. . ' ’ The afternoon will be devoted to fire with movement over ground ranging from five hundred to one hundred '.yards from the targets. The cadets made a commencement of their championship at short range, f 'all showing great keenness.
