LORRY ABLAZE. WELLINGTON, March 8. A match thrown down by a passerby, while William Eagle was filling a lorry tank with benzine, on Customhouse Quay, ignited the fumes therefrom, and instantly the lorry was a mass of flames. Fire extinguishers from nearby business premises kept the blaze in check till the Fire Brigade arrived with a chemical outfit. The lorry suffered about £5O worth of damage. Eagle escaped uninjured. apples EXPORT. HASTINGS, March 8. A ■ special train leaves Hastings' tomorrow for’ Wellington, with 10,750 cases of apples for export to England. ' ( M KILLED BY CAR. ASHBURTON, March 8. 'A motorist, who did not stop, knocked down Joseph Claude Pearce, who with a companion, was cycling from Fairfield to Ashburton, at 7.5. p.m. on Saturday. Pearce, who died from the injuries sustained, was 24 years of age, and a labourer, at the freezing works. Deceased was riding on the left hand side v of the road with a friend, George. Lysaght, . who . states that they were proceeding along-a little north of Mitcham Road, when two cars approached from behind. The first car passed, but the second came on towards them,' then pulled on to the crown of the road. As the car made this manoeuvre the rear of the vehicle struck the seat of deceased’s bicycle and threw him off,. Deceased sustained serious injuries to his headl and was rendered unconscious. The car did not stop. An inquest was opened and adjourned.
