KUMARA NOTES

KUMARA, March 5,
Mr W. Stewart, the owner of Gaslight, left town this morning to attend the Nelson races, where his horse is engaged in some of the tevents. Miss’ McDonald, of Christchurch, is on a visit to Kumara, and is staying with her parents. Mr F. Hiskens, one of the old pioneers of the Coast, was in Kumara during the Jubilee celebrations. Mr Htiskens has just returned from the Old Country, where he hag been on a visit. He was for over twenty years a reporter on the Christchurch “Press.” ■The work of cleaning up the town after the Jubilee celebrations is now in hand, and in the course of A day or so, all trace of what was undoubtedly the greatest and most successful function ever held in Kumara, will have disappeared. The friends of Mr W. J.Mcllroy, formerly of Kumara and Greymouth, will be sorry to hear that his health of late has not been satisfactory. Mr Mcllroy is now a resident of Christchurch.
During the Jubilee celebrations just ended, all the-hotels in town are said to have done a roaring trade. In some instances the bars were so crowded that unless on® got in early, it was impossible to get in at allConstable Drummond, of Rimu, who has been assisting Constable Fox, returned to his home on Thursday evening. The fact that some of the flags, used for decorating the town, in the early part of the week, have 'been stolen, is sufficient evidence that some undesirables were on the job. Mesdames R. Bell and A. Thorn left for the Dunedin Exhibition this morning. It is said that wandering cattle have caused a good deal of damage, to vegetable gardens lately. In three instances, gardens have been cleaned right out. Next Court day a record batch of summonses for wandering stock, will be 110 HTCI* As the result of a statement made by the Minister of Mines that it was his intention to dispose of the Government water races to the highest bidder, the Mayor has called a public meeting for Wednesday evening next, to go into the matter.
