GREY MAIN SCHOOL
MEETING OE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Main School Committee was held last evening; present: Messrs J. Tennent (chairman), R. Barrowman, R. J. Williams, P. Beck, T. B- Baty, W. Scott, U. Tierring, and J: Lamberton (secretary). Mr .1). M. Shirlaw (headmaster) was members by the Chairman, also present, and was introduced to the tended a hearty welcome. He hoped that Mr Shirlaw’s stay at Greymouth would be profitable to himself and to the school. The Committee would at all times be prepared fully to cooperate with- him. In reply, Mr Shirlaw said that his sole aim would be to promote the interests of the children under his care. With the co-operation qI the Committee and the teachers, the success of the school would be assured. The Chairman reported that the remuneration of the caretaker at Blaketown had been increased to £2 per month, and this was approved. The Headmaster reported that the average attendances had been as follow :—Main School: Boys, 283; girls, 288 ■, total, 571; out of a roll number of 611 (305 boys and 306 girls). Blaketown: Boys, 47; girls, 40; total,B7, out of a roll number of 91 (49 boys and 42 girls). Miss A. Wylie left on February 26, and Miss Janet B. Brown commenced duty on Tuesday last. The Canterbury Education Board forwarded the application of Miss M. O’Brien as assistant teacher, and this was approved. The report, of the Dental Officer (Miss Pragnell) was received and adopted. The Chairman stated that she was doing good work, and on a recent visit the Inspector had expressed satisfaction with the clinic. Miss Pragnell would be leaving shortly, as her (appointment was only temporary; but a permanent appointment would be made at an early date. It was hoped to treat pupils at schools in outside districts within tlie next few months. The report of the Visiting Committee (Messrs Scott and Herring) detailed various minor repairs necessary at the Main and Blaketown schools. It was decided that these should be attended to. Mr Williams moved that the Chairman interview the Board’s foreman, with the object of having the interior of the gymnasium painted. The resolution was carried. Mr Williams drew attention, to the growth of gorse at- the rear of the gymnasium. It was. he said, sft or 6ft high, and was a menace. “It is on the Borough road, Ts" it not, Mr Williams?” asked the Chairman. He moved that the Borough Counciil be written to, with a view to having the gorse removed. , 'The was seconded by Mr Beck, amTcarrieJ.
