COBDEN NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The deposit of dredgings from the river adjacent to Cobden Beach lias meant an appreciable additioft to the shingle cast up by the sea. No blacksand is now visible, and the occupation of the beach-comber for the present has gone. Yards of beach now extend all along the rocks to the end of the breakwater. Possibly this has something to do with the depth of water on the bar between the breakwaters. An electton for a licensing committee will be held on March 9 for the Buller constituency. As Cobden is part of the electoral district, the Cobden School Gymnasium will be the polling booth. Seven candidates are nominated lor five seats. Westland and a number.of Canterbury constituencies have managed to avoid an election by having only five nominees, but in Buller the local bodies will have the expense of an election. The Cobden War Memorial Committee are organising a Wonderland Carnival, in order to raise funds to complete their portion of the work in connection with the Memorial Bridge. Lately a. further panel of fresh names of returned soldiers has been added, and when some necessary fencing has been undertaken and the road further rolled and channelling constructed, the word “complete” can be applied. To effect the consummation of t’he object in view, it is hoped that the response to the appeal will be both prompt and liberal. Blackberries felt the effect of the wet December, and very few are maturing and less ripening. Even with the prevailing sunny days it is now too late to expect, much fruit, the shrubs in many parts being only in the flowering stage. Gardens, too, are somewhat backward as a consequence of excess of moisture. Cabbages and such like have matured quickly, but the vine variety of vegeable, for instance, pumpkins, marrows and cucumbers, have come away very slowly. The electors’ roll for the Cobden Town District will be compiled during the month of April- As the election of a new Town Board will take place in September next it behoves all entitled to vote thereat to see that their names are on the roll. It is expected that there will be a number of candidates seeking office.
