AUSTRALIAN OIL INVESTIGATORS’ REPORT. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MELBOURNE, March 4. A report was tabled in the House of Representatives concerning investigations into the possibility of the development of oil and shale deposits of the Commonwealth, and of production within Australia of liquid, fuels and power alcohol from local material, with a view to ascertaining the best means whereby Australia can be made less dependent upon overseas sources

for oil requirements. It is pointed out that in New South W'ales it is estimated there are forty million tons of shale, representing 3500 million gallons of oil. Part of this is stated to be one of the richest shales in the world, averaging in actual distillation about 101 gallons to the ton. In Tasmania the probable reserves of shale are set doWn at 42,000,000 tons, averaging about forty gallons to the ton. This deposit is more accessible and more easily mined than the New South Wales shale and it is considered, from a commercial standpoint, that its development would -be more favourable on account of the lower working costs. It is considered that the continuance of the Commonwealth bounty of per gallon is essential to the conduct of the industry.
