HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, March 4. There was a moderate attendance at the Hokitika Sports ivleeting held yesterday afternoon. The events were all well contested, and good fields were the order of the day. The visiting cyclists, J. Wells and Burnand, revealed wonderful. pace, always having something to spare at the psychological moment. Wells, ,hpw-. ever, withdrew from one heat and nad a puncture in another, compelling his retirement just when he looked the winner. The various events were got off to time, the. committee having organised the . meeting thoroughlyThe absence of a Dana was felt by many. This was unavoidable, as fully half the members .of the local Band are absent. •? ,The tar-sealing of Revell Street is almost completed, the fine weather of the last three days giving ' tne. Borough staff an opportunity to make good progress. At a meeting of . the Westland
- o Fewer Board, held on Tuesday mgnt, a proposal was put forward by Mr J. S. Langford, on behalf of a company, to develop power for ‘generating electricity in the vicinity of the Government dam near Waimea, and supplying power and light throughout the district, extending from the Tereinak'au to the Hokitika Borough boundary. Mr Langford stated that the people behind him were prepared to put in a complete power scneme, to cost not less than £20,000. He said it might be possible to supply the Kumara Borough and tahi. In all, about 600. h.p. would be developed, and of which two mining propositions would absorb 100 h.p. Mr Langford.was very optimistic concerning the proposal. The company required the Board’s permission to reticulate the district, and permission was also necessary to enable the company to obtain a license from the Public Works Department. The company is prepared to enter into an agreement with the Board for the latter to have the right to take over the installation at some future, time at a valuation, or an equally suitable basis. The Board subsequently passed a resolution granting permission to the proposed company as requested. The question of bridging the smaller streams on the South road was discussed at a special meeting of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Progress League on Tuesday night called for that purpose. After some discussion a scheme in which the Westland County Council would find £l5OO, the Hokitika Borough £5OO, and £5OO found by donations, was put forward. The amount (£2500) is about' one-fourth of the estimated cost of the bridges to be erected. Messrs Bruce, Mclntosh, Macfarlane', and Dr. Teichelmann ■ were appointed a committee to carry out the scheme. It was resolved to urge the County Council to take a poll on a loan) in May next, at the time of the election for members, and the Borough Council as early as possible ; and to take steps to ascertain what donations will be forthcoming to make up the £5OO.
