GREY COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Grey County Council was continued yesterday afternoon after the “Star” had gone to press. Present: Crs J. W. Hannan (chairman), J. Greaney, H. G. Carter, J. Byall, P. Donnellan, A. Robinson, A. Blair, D. Baybutt. Cr Donnellan drew attention to the encroachment by Nelson Creek on the property of Mr C. Fletcher, Ngahere. —lt was resolved to get the Engineer to inspect the locality, and report. Mr C. Warren, Runanga, was granted pel-mission to lay pipes across and under the Greymouth-Westport road, at the 13-Mile Peg, for mining purposes. Mr 0. G. Bird wrote on behalf of the residents of Bell Hill, urging the •• speedy completion of the road from Haupiri Junction to Bell Hill. —It
was decided to inform Mr Bird that a® soon as the grants were decided, tS e work would be proceeded with. The matter of the bridge was left in the hands of the Engineer. The local bodies in No. 12 Highways District forwarded returns of the number of heavy motor licenses issued by them and particulars of fees collected. In some cases the licenses issued and fees collected showed an apparent lack of energy in seeing that all vehicles within such local bodies’ jurisdiction were properly licensed. The Secretary of the Ahaura Li-
brary Committee wrote asking the Council for the usual donation towards the funds of the library. —It was resolved to vote £5. The Auditor-General forwarded the Council’s balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1925, duly certified to. There were no “tags.” z Cr Donnellan moved that the Railway District Engineer (Mr J. McNair), Mr Miller (foreman) and his staff, be thanked for the speedy reopening of the Ngahere-Blackball bridge;—Seconded by Cr Ryall and carried unanimously. Cr Ryall said the Council had already sent ,a telegram congratulating the Minister of Railways on the achievement. He thought that those who had actually done the work should have a letter of appreciation sent them. It was decided to bring the following matters before the Main High-
ways Board during its visit to Greymouth to-day : —lmprovement to the south approach to the Teremakau combined railway and traffic bridge; widening of bridge on the downstream side to take motor traffic; widening of main highway from Paroa to Teremakau. Owing to the narrowness of the road from the Australasin Hotel onwards the maintenance is becoming more difficult each year. The Council will urge that provision be made in next year’s Estimates for improvements to the Omoto section of the main
highway, as, during the holiday season, the heavy traffic constitutes a
grave danger, in addition to which better visibility is needed at several
points. Reconstruction of the Ahaura bridge : provision should be made for the work on the coming Estimates, as the whole superstructure needs attention. Completion tof Greymouth-
Barrytown-Westport Road: As this
road provides the shortest route be-
tween Buller and Westland, its com-
pletion is urged, and a request is made
for the road to be declared a Govern-
ment road and a main highway
