AUCKLAND, January 20.
The Auckland swimming ‘team to compete at the New Zealand championships, left for Napier to-night. A. D. Adamson, the Auckland 100 yards champion and New Zealand record bolder, left with the team, a deputation from the Auckland Swimming Centre to his employers being successful, in obtaining leave. Kronfield, however, did not leave.
SYDNEY, January 21. The swimming championship of New South Wales resulted: —
220 yards: Christie 1, J)oyle x 2, Griffiths 3. Time, 2 min. 30 4-5 secs. 440 yards, back stroke: Carberry 1, Kirkland 2, Campbell 3. Time 1 niin. 14 2-5 secs. ATHLETICS. HAWERA, January 21. At a sports meeting conducted by the local club last evening, S. Lay broke the Dominion’s record for javelin throwing, 178 feet l-j. inches, beating Sutherland’s record by four feet three and three quarter inches. CYCLE CLUB SPORTS
The Grey Cycling Club, following on its programme last season,, opened a series of weekly evening sports programmes last evening, in Victoria Park, when there was a good attendance, and some fine racing.. The two-mile cycle event was of principal interest, the riding of L. Wilson, who recently competed in the Warrnambool road race, and won last evening, exciting much favourable comment. It is proposed to hold a short programme every Thursday evening during the autumn. Last evening four events were decided, the results being as follow:— Half-Mile Cycle Handicap.—First Heat —H. G. Wilson (50yds) 1, C. Kennedy (35yds) 2, Batty (60yds) 3. Time 65 2-5 secs. Second Heat—W. Blackmun (25yds) 1, H. Woods (40yds) 2, L. A. Wilson (scr.), 3. Time 70 2-5 secs. Final—H. G. Wilson 1, Woods 2, C. Kenendy 3. Time 68 secs. Boys’ Half-Mile Cycle Handicap.— Turtill (10) 1, Baty (scr.) 2, Taafe (35) 3. Time Imin 14secs. Two Mile Cycle Handicap.—L Wilson (scr.) 1, H. G. Wilson (160) 2, A. G. Woods (120) 3. Time 4 min 59 1-5 secs. Also started: Blackmun (70), C. Kennedy (120), H. Dimond (120), A. Henry (140),. A. TwohilT (140). Boys’ Cycle Race, Half Mile.—P. RIFLE SHOOTING. The Grey Defence Rifle - Club's second shoot for the Bromley Belt was concluded 1 yesterday Rifleman N. Williams being top scorer with a fine shoot of 101. The rest of Vhe shooting throughout was not as good as last week. The following were the scores over' 80.—
