The death occurred at Nelson last week of Mrs Stephenson, mother of Mr H. W. Stephenson, 'of Warnes and Stephenson, Ltd., Wellington. The deceased lady was a resident of Nelson for many years. She leaves a husljand, two daughters, and one son. I

Advisory-Superintendent T. J. Waft, of the United l Fire Brigades Association of New Zealand, was present at the West Coast Fire Brigades’ Demonstration in Westport on’.Saturday. He came on to Greymouth yesterday, and left for Christchurch this morning;

The Chief Justice, Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Stout has intimated to the Government his intention to tender his resignation. The resignation is to take effect on February 1,. 1926. Tire Government offered the appointment of Chief Justice to Mr C. P. Skerrett, K.C., of Wellington, and have now been advised of Mr Skerrett’® acceptance.

Th© funeral of the late William A. Roberts, of Turamaha Street, took place, on. Saturday afternoon. There Was a,'large attendance of friends, and members _ of the Oddfellows’ Lodge. The ‘Service at the graveside was con. ducted by Archdeacon Carr, and the Oddfellows’ service impressively read by Bro. L. S. Green, N.G.

The body of the late Duncan McLean, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Duncan McLean, of Greymouth, was brought from Wellington by Saturday’s express. Mr Joseph McLean proceeded to Wellington to accompany the body home. The casket was taken to . the residence« off Mr Joseph McLean, and the interment, which was private, was attended by relatives and present and past employees of Duncan McLean Limited. A service was conducted by the Rev. T. N. Cuttie in the house and was attended by Mr and Mrs Tom Learnwnt (sister of deceased), Messrs J. and O. McLean, brothers, in addition to the staff. The body was conveyed to Karoro, several members of the staff officiating as pall-bearers. Tlie Rev. Cuttie read the. burial service.

Warm ’tributes to their foreman, Mr R. A.' Walker, were paid by the locomotive staff of the Greymouth Rail-way-Department on Saturday evening, when a farewell gathering was held in the Drivers’ Room, prior to Mr Walk, er’s departure bn promotion for Frank- • ton Junction, on Thursday next. Mr H. Daniel, on behalf of the staff, askc ed Mr Walker to accept a well-filled wallet as a token of their esteem and appreciation of the way in which he had tarried -out his ditties since coming to Greymouth nearly two years ago. They were all very sorry to lose ' him, but wished him and' his family every success in the future. Several "■ • other speakers endorsed the remarks of Mr Daniel, and Mr Walker made an appropriate reply. Three (cheers for the departing' foreman were given as the gathering broke up. Mr A. Evans will arrive from Dunedin by to-morrow’s express, having been appointed loco foreman at Greymouth.
