BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST EVENING’S MEETING.

The Greymouth Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr AV. H. Parfitt) presided, and all Councillors were present, except Cr J. O’Brien (on leave). On behalf of the residents of Threadneedle Street, A. Grant wrote asking that the condition of the street be improved, the broken state of the footpath being described as a menace. Over two years ago, said the writer, a petition was signed by all the residents and presented to the Council. The matter was then referred to the Works Committee, and it was decided that the work be done at an early, date. There appeared to have been some neglect or oversight by those responsible. Immediate attention to the repairs was requested. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act, on the motion of Cr McGinley, seconded by Cr G. Perotti. That a drain be put in on the Council’s section adjacent to his property, was a request made by Mr P. Nelson, Swanson Street. He stated that the water and other drainage coming from the Council’s section on to his property, was detrimental to the health of his family. Cr McGinley moved that the Works Committee be given power to act. It was only a small, job. The resolution was seconded, by Cr Perotti and. carried. X The New Zealand Forestry League wrote asking that a meeting of those interested in the preservation and. utilisation of native forests be convened, with a view to forming a branch of the League at Greymouth. Cr McGinley moved that the matter be left in the hands of the Mayor, with power to act. Cr Perotti again seconded the motion, and it was carried. Cr H; F. Doogan humorously remarked that the two councillors seemed to be. running the meeting! A letter of thanks was received from the Hokitika Borough Council for the

information supplied by the Council s Engineer (Mr E. M. Williams) in connection with the installation of the tardistilling plant put in by the Hokitika Council. Further draft regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, were forwarded by the Minister of Internal Affairs. f i The matter was referred to the Traffic Committee to report. REPORTS. The pipes for Cowper Street drain have arrived and the work of opening up the old drain is in hand. 'The work of renovating the several rooms in the Town Hall building is almost completed. The taxi stand telephone box has been removed to the Children’s Park. The new box in the Hotel Do-

Tlw drainage can, however, be run. into the open drain in Paroa Road in the usual way. The crossing applied for can be granted under the usual conditions. In company with Mr T. Clarke, superintendent of the Fir© Brigade, an inspection of the Opera House was made. Certain alterations to means of exit were decided upon, as necessary for the safety of the public. Th© Waterworks plant has been running satisfactorily, and a good depth of water has been maintained in the reservoir. Mr J. I). Gillies, C.E., will forward price for checking plans to the next meeting of the Finance Committee. Lombard Street. —I interviewed Mr Watkinson, Public Works Engineer, re the exemption of this street. Mr Watkinson had reported on this street in July last. In reply to Cr J. W. Greenslade, the Engineer said that the suggested drainage would not involve any expense to the Council. The report was adopted. On behalf of the Works Committee, th© Chairman (Cr Williams) reported as follows: —“Having conferred with the County Engineer regarding combining with him in establishing a stonecrushing plant at Te Kinga, we recommend that the present time is inopportune for such a large scheme. Hoad to Old People’s Home: We recommend that. Hiirh Street be made suitable for

tnav xngii kjoiceu _ vehicular traffic by forming and metalling same 18ft wide, and that the Engineer prepare specifications and tenders for the work, as outlined by the Committee. The Hospital Board has undertaken to construct footpaths for pedestrian traffic to the Home. W e have further enquired into the motor traffic in Stalker's Lane, and as it is a public thoroughfare, we cannot do better than ask the Traffic Insector to see that motors using the lane take all precautions to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The Co-operative Dairy Coinpany has promised to exercise every care when using the Lane. It is recommended that the matter of purchasing a boiler for the Gasworks be referred to the Finance Committee. Other matters referred to us will be attended to as soon as practicable.” The recommendation regarding the etone-crusliing plant was held over, penning receipt oi infoimation from the Highways Board, and the remainder of the report .was adopted. ” The Mayor referred to the gravelling and metalling of Elizabeth Street, and reported that the lowest tender (£118) submitted by Mr A.
