WESTPORT, July 10. Favoured with fine weather again,

hockey players had good games on dry ground on Thursday. In the men’s match, the A. team defeated the B. team by three goals to one goal. For the winners Schadick (2), and Stowell (1),. and for the losers J. Caldwell were the scorers. Subsequently the Buller representative team to meet Australia on J uly 28 was chosen as follows:—Ryder,

Davies, Tregurtha, Kalla, Bowden, Phibbs, Larsen, H. Lockey, Shadick, / Stowell, Walker. Emergencies: backs, Hufton, Allan; forwards, J. Caldwell, G- Blair. The ladies’ match, Westport v. Ramblers furnished an exciting game, with several casualties, Miss A. Ryan getting a nasty-shock in a collision and Miss H. Ryan a severe blow on the head from the ball. Ramblers won by one goal nil, scoredi by Miss Watt. School played havoc with Uni teds, whom they defeated by 5 goals to nil. In the first spell Uniteds held school well, and did quite a lob of attacking, but could not find the net. In the second sjlell school got some scores rathqr easily, but still the win was well merited-

At the debate in St. Canice’s on “Arbitration as the Method of Settling International Disputes,’’ the affirmative won. Mr S- De Filippi, who has been an inmate of the district hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis, has made a good recovery and leaves on return to his Home at Three Channel Flat to-day.

Miss Kathleen Mary Mackenzie leaves for Reef ton to-morrow, to join the nursing staff of that Hospital. Mr Bomsch left yesterday on u holiday visit to Grey mouth. Miss Agnes Holland, daughter of Mr H. E. Hofland M;P., who has been on extended holiday visit to her relatives in Australia Utetumed to Westport yesterday. The first meeting of the Girl Guides was held on Thursday night, when there was a large muster. Four full companies were foflned. ~ Each company consists of one captain, one Lieutenant, four troop leaders, and not more than 24 girls. The little girls under 11 are called brownies, and have a company of their/owii. Girls from 11 to 16 have been divided into two companies.

At the annual meeting of the Buller Acclimatisation 'Society on Thursday evening, Mr A. Wells presided. Officers were elected for the ensuing year as follow:—President, Mr Wells, Vice-President, Mr Bryan ; Secretary, Ml- Radford ; Auditor, Mr Hobbs; Council, Messrs Sunby, Hart, Shilton, Powick, Pain, Morgan, Weston, De Tourettes’, Fox, and Gardner. The sum of £5 5s was donated to Mr Durkin in recognition of his voluntary .services in connection with Mallard Duck. It was resolved to procure 50,000 rainbow trout ova, also to invite quotations for Canadian Geese. It was decided to obtain a supply of opossums for liberation in other parts of the district.
