WESTPORT, June 29.
The Westport Poultry Club held its annual show on Thursday and hriday, the, principal prizes in the open classes being won as follow: Best bird in show, J. Neighbours, who also annexed tne prize for the best bird hatched aim. reared in the Buller district; best Wyandotte., Mrs Stowell; second best bird, T. J. Niven; Buff Pekin Championship, H. Pearson; Black Rose Comb Championship, J. Fountaine. In the utility classes, the prize Winners were:—Best bird in show, E. Humphries ; White Leghorn Championship, I{. Brownlie; best bird and reared in the Buller district, E. Humphries; best pigeon in show, Les Solomon. .. Mr J/ Warren, on leaving the Railway Workshops at Westport on transfer to Napier, was presented by Mr Taylor, on behalf of his fellow workers, with a. wallet of notes. Mr T. McKenzie, caretaker of the Westport Trotting Club’s Racecourse, has been admitted to the district hospital. '■ - The Westport Coal Company s output last week was 7489 tons 16cwt and Stockton 1226 tons llcwt. Pvumour hath it that the Millerton strike will end to-morrow. The annual meeting of the local branch of the St. John Ambulance Association was held in the Town Hall. Mr Dallaston presided and there was a good attendance of ladies. A letter was received from St. Mary’s College, stating that ten pupils were available this year and asking that the classes be held at the College for the convenience of country jmd other pupils not able to attend evening classes. —Referred to the Committee.
The annual report was read and adopted. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a- credit balance of £26 16s 2d. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the secretary, Air Shanks.
The presentation of certificates was then made by the chairman to the following students: —Alisses Fayen, Crowe, Curtin, McGrath, Marr, Silcock, King, Kelly, Jenkins Taylor, Went, Lowe and Alorrison. Alessrs A. Dallaston (2nd year), R. Wood, C. King, G. Langborne, G. Knight, A. Curtis, C. G. Worthington, J. Howie and J. Horrach.
The following committee was appointed for the ensuing year : —Alisses A. Alarris, A. Alartin, Findlay, Bayfield; Mesdames Alartin; Shanks; Revs. Pickering, AJiller and Jermyn ; Alessrs Worthington, AlcDonagh, and Dallaston.
The Secretary dwelt upon the work of the Society and the advantages obtained by students who have completed the course and who are members of the organisation. He mentioned that two members present that evening, Alisses Alarris and Alartin, had received their silver badges ag honorary associates from His Majesty the King during their visit to London. It is generally understood that work will be resumed at Alillerton mine on Tuesday ; that is; provided there is shipping, of which, there promises to be very little this week. Presumably, immediately the Alillevton strike occurred, vessels intended to come to load at Westport, were diverted t© Australia.
