SCULLING RACE

HOLDER RETAINS TITLE.

SYDNEY, June 28.

Many thousands lined the banks of the Parramatta, River yesterday in fine but dull weather, to witness the contest for the world’s sculling chain, pionship between Goodsell and Hannan. There was a southwest breeze blowing, which militated against both men’s chances for a mile and. a hajf. Thereafter, the turn of the river put them out of its

range . Both men were in perfect condition, although Goodsell lookid the better of the two.

When the pistol went, Goadsell caught thd water first, and he -shot ahead, but Hannan in the first sixty yards drew Iqyel with him. This was th? only time that the New Zealander was on terms with the champion. Goodsell was rowing, twenty-eight strokes to the minute, against hannan’s thirty, and he established a lead of foui' lengths which he maintained throughout. When the first two bun dred yards had been passed, Goodsell had a lead of five lengths, and was rowing strongly, and he continued from this to the. finish, almost without' effort, to maintain his advantage, row, in" 26 to the minute. Approaching the Gasworks, Gocdsell led by ten lengths, while Hannan appeared to be distressed, altrough the pace was an easy one. Hannan then spurted, and

His burst, however, was only a flash in the pan; but Hannan nevertheless began to make strenuous efforts to.reduce his opponent’s lead, but it was a vain effort, G-oodsell keeping'in advance. nan’s .time was 21 min 35 secs. Tho race was disappointing to Hau. paifs supporters, as the New Zealander never once looked like a winner. Good, sell took command at the start, and had complete control of the race. Hannan congratulated Goodsell on his win and said that he deserved success as he was the better man of the day. Hannan added that he was not at all satisfied with his own condition. He did not think that he had sufficient time to train. The stake money had worried him and the wet weather also interfered. He would like anothei- match with Goodsell. EXPERT OPINIONS. SYDNEY, June 29. The “Daily Telegraph,” concerning Hannan’s gameness, declares that he is not in the same class as Goodsell. Beach describes Goodsell as a remarkably clever sculler, .capable of doing much better and with a wonderful future before him. His victory was

most decisive, but- Hannah showed gameness in a heart-breaking, stern chase nearly all the way.
